Hello and welcome to our website. We are a small family run business offering childcare for children from birth to school age. We are located on the senior school site in St. Ives. We have a highly qualified team that will guide your child through the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS).

30 Hours Free Childcare

In September 2017 certain families will be eligible to receive 30 hours of free childcare. As far as we are aware the criteria for families are as follows:

  • Both parents must be working for a minimum of 16 hours per week*. Where children come from lone parent families, the parent/carer must be working for at least 16 hours per week.
  • Each parent can earn a maximum for £100,000 per year.

In order for parents to access 30 hours free childcare there will be an online process, at the end of which, you will be given a code. You will have to bring this code to us in order for you to access the scheme.

We endeavor to bring you all up to date news as soon as we are aware.

*Parents/carers that work during the season (and and where their hours may drop during term time), there will be a grace period during which your child will still be eligible. This grace period has yet to be determined.

Here is a link to the government's website relating to 30 hours free childcare:

When you have your code, please fill out a funding form (Available here) and take it to Joe / Sue /Louise. We will also need a copy of your child's birth certificate/passport.

Mission Statement

We believe that children need to be happy and settled before they can enjoy and learn. We aim to make the time children spend at The Barn Nursery a happy and fun filled one, where each child is valued and helped to reach their full potential.  We believe through play children learn to construct their own knowledge about the world and, at The Barn, we encourage children to explore and experiment; be creative and imaginative; socialise with others  and most important of all, to have fun and enjoy their experience here.  To this end the nursery’s ethos is based upon providing a home-like experience where a key person takes responsibility for the well-being of his/her own group of children and where a warm, loving, safe environment is assured to foster the child’s feelings of security.

To do this we will ensure all staff are qualified, or working toward qualifying. Through ongoing professional development and regular training staff will be aware of child development, keep abreast of current research and best practice.    Robust recruitment,  safety checks and supervision meetings will be used to limit the possibility of inappropriate or unsuitable staff being employed in the setting.

We will deliver the curriculum through playful activities that are specifically tailored to the child’s needs.  By observing and talking with the children the key person can see how they are disposed to learn, what they like doing and how they like to do it.

We see parents as our partners and will ask them to participate in planning for their child. We use Tapestry – a secure online learning journal to monitor and observe children’s progress.  Parents will be invited to add to this to supplement and inform any notes and plans made by the key worker.

Consultation with parents is available at any time informally or if a more lengthy or private consultation is wanted an appointment can be made.  We offer parents consultation sessions a minimum of twice per year.

We will support children at times of transitions working with colleagues and other professionals, such as teachers, to ensure children manage these with confidence.
